1Kdo miluje cvičení, miluje umění; kdož pak nenávidí domlouvání, nemoudrý jest. 2Dobrý nalézá lásku u Hospodina, ale muže nešlechetného potupí Bůh. 3Nebývá trvánlivý člověk v bezbožnosti, kořen pak spravedlivých nepohne se. 4Žena statečná jest koruna muže svého, ale jako hnis v kostech jeho ta, kteráž k hanbě přivodí. 5Myšlení spravedlivých jsou pravá, rady pak bezbožných lstivé. 6Slova bezbožných úklady činí krvi, ústa pak spravedlivých vytrhují je. 7Vyvráceni bývají bezbožní tak, aby jich nebylo, ale dům spravedlivých ostojí. 8Podlé toho, jakž rozumný jest, chválen bývá muž, převráceného pak srdce bude v pohrdání. 9Lepší jest nevzácný, kterýž má služebníka, nežli ten, kterýž sobě slavně počíná, a nemá chleba. 10Pečuje spravedlivý o život hovádka svého, srdce pak bezbožných ukrutné jest. 11Kdo dělá zemi svou, nasycen bývá chlebem; ale kdož následuje zahalečů, blázen jest. 12Žádostiv jest bezbožný obrany proti zlému, ale kořen spravedlivých způsobuje ji. 13Do přestoupení rtů zapletá se zlostník, ale spravedlivý vychází z ssoužení. 14Z ovoce úst každý nasycen bude dobrým, a odplatu za skutky člověka dá jemu Bůh. 15Cesta blázna přímá se zdá jemu, ale kdo poslouchá rady, moudrý jest. 16Hněv blázna v tentýž den poznán bývá, ale opatrný hanbu skrývá. 17Kdož mluví pravdu, ohlašuje spravedlnost, svědek pak falešný lest. 18Někdo vynáší řeči podobné meči probodujícímu, ale jazyk moudrých jest lékařství. 19Rtové pravdomluvní utvrzeni budou na věky, ale na kratičko jazyk lživý. 20V srdci těch, kteříž zlé obmýšlejí, bývá lest, v těch pak, kteříž radí ku pokoji, veselí. 21Nepotká spravedlivého žádná těžkost, bezbožní pak naplněni budou zlým. 22Ohavností jsou Hospodinu rtové lživí, ale ti, jenž činí pravdu, líbí se jemu. 23Člověk opatrný tají umění, ale srdce bláznů vyvolává bláznovství. 24Ruka pracovitých panovati bude, lstivá pak musí dávati plat. 25Starost v srdci člověka snižuje ji, ale věc dobrá obveseluje ji. 26Vzácnější jest nad bližního svého spravedlivý, cesta pak bezbožných svodí je. 27Nebude péci fortelný, což ulovil, ale člověk bedlivý statku drahého nabude. 28Na stezce spravedlnosti jest život, a cesta stezky její nesmrtelná jest.

the root . . . fruit--their own resources supply them; or, it may be rendered: "He (God) giveth, or, sets (
Ezek 17:22) the root of the righteous," and hence it is firm: or, the verb is impersonal; "As to the root . . . it is firm" (
Pro 17:19).
13 The wicked is snared, &c.--The sentiment expanded. While the wicked, such as liars, flatterers, &c., fall by their own words, the righteous are unhurt. Their good conduct makes friends, and God rewards them.
15 The way . . . eyes--The fool is self-conceited (compare
Pro 12:1;
Pro 1:32;
Pro 10:17;
Jas 3:17).
16 prudent . . . shame--He is slow to denounce his insulters (
Jas 1:19).
18 speaketh--literally, "speaketh hastily," or indiscreetly (
Ps 106:33), as an angry man retorts harsh and provoking invectives.
tongue . . . health--by soothing and gentle language.
19 Words of truth are consistent, and stand all tests, while lies are soon discovered and exposed.
20 that imagine--or, "plan" (
Pro 3:29). They design a deceitful course, to which, with all its evils and dangers to others and themselves, the happiness of peace-makers is opposed (compare
