1Korach, syn Jischara, syna Leviho syna Kehata, Eliabovi synové Datan a Abiram a Peletův syn On (Eliab a Pelet byli synové Rubenovi) byli pyšní; 2spolu s dvěma sty padesáti Izraelity, knížaty obce, proslulými muži, kteří požívali vážnosti při slavnostech, povstali proti Mojžíšovi. 3Srotili se tedy proti Mojžíšovi a Áronovi a říkali jim: „Překračujete míru! Posvěcená je přece celá obec, všichni její členové, to uprostřed nich je Jahve. Proč se povyšujete nad Jahvovu obec?“ 4Když to Mojžíš uslyšel, padl tváří k zemi. 5Potom řekl Korachovi a celé jeho skupině: „Zítra ráno dá Jahve najevo, kdo mu patří, kdo je posvěcený muž, jemuž on bude dovolovat, aby se k němu přiblížil. Komu dovolí, aby se k němu přiblížil, je ten, koho si vyvolil. 6Hle, co uděláte: vezměte od Koracha a celé jeho skupiny kadidelnice, 7dejte do nich oheň a zítra na něj před Jahvem položte kadidlo. Koho si Jahve vyvolí, ten bude zasvěceným mužem. Překračujete míru, Leviho synové!“ 8Mojžíš řekl Korachovi: „Slyšte tedy, Leviho synové! 9Je vám málo, že vás Izraelův Bůh odlišil od obce Izraele tím, že vás k sobě povolal, abyste konali službu Jahvovu Příbytku, že vás postavil před tuto obec, když za ni konáte službu? 10On tě k sobě povolal a s tebou i všechny tvé bratry Leviovce, a vy ještě chcete být kněžími! 11Ty a tvá skupina jste se tudíž spolčili proti Jahvovi: tak co je Áron, že proti němu reptáte?“ 12Mojžíš poslal pro Eliabovy syny Datana a Abirama. Oni odpověděli: „Nepřijdeme. 13Není dost na tom, že jsi nás přiměl opustit zemi, která oplývá mlékem a medem, abychom pomřeli na této poušti, to se chceš nad námi ještě vynášet jako kníže? 14Ach! Nezavedl jsi nás do země, která oplývá mlékem a medem, a nedal jsi nám pole a sady za dědictví! Hodláš ty muže oslepit? Nepřijdeme.“ 15Mojžíš se prudce rozhněval a řekl Jahvovi: „Nedbej na jejich nekrvavé oběti. Já jsem jim nevzal ani osla a nikomu z nich jsem neublížil.“ 16Mojžíš řekl Korachovi: „Přijďte ty i celá tvá skupina zítra před Jahva, ty i oni a také Áron. 17Ať si každý vezme svou kadidelnici, dá do ní kadidlo a ať každý přinese svou kadidelnici před Jahva - dvě stě padesát kadidelnic. Také ty i Áron přineste každý svou kadidelnici.“ 18Každý si vzal svou kadidelnici, dal do ní oheň a na něj položil kadidlo. Potom se postavili u vchodu do Stanu setkávání, Mojžíš a Áron také. 19Korach naproti nim shromáždil celou obec ke vchodu do Stanu setkávání a Jahvova sláva se ukázala celé obci. 20Jahve promluvil k Mojžíšovi a Áronovi. Řekl: 21„Oddělte se od této obce, v okamžiku ji zničím.“ 22Oni padli tváří k zemi a zvolali: „Bože, Bože duchů, kteří oživují každé tělo, rozhněváš se na celou obec, když jeden jediný zhřeší?“ 23Jahve promluvil k Mojžíšovi a řekl: 24„Promluv k té obci a řekni: ‘Vzdalte se od Korachova obydlí.’“ 25Mojžíš vstal a odešel k Datanovi a Abiramovi; starší Izraele šli za ním. 26Promluvil k obci a řekl: „Pro smilování, odstupte od stanů těch zvrhlých mužů a nedotýkejte se ničeho, co jim patří, aby vás nesklátily všechny jejich hříchy.“ 27Oni odstoupili z blízkosti Korachova domu. Datan a Abiram vyšli a stáli se svými ženami, syny a mladšími dětmi u vchodu svých stanů. 28Mojžíš řekl: „Podle toho poznáte, že k vykonání všech těchto děl mě poslal Jahve a že je nedělám podle své vlastní hlavy: 29zemřou-li tito mužové přirozenou smrtí, zasaženi rozsudkem společným pro všechny lidi, znamená to, že mě Jahve neposlal. 30Udělá-li však Jahve něco neslýchaného, otevře-li země svá ústa a pohltí je i vše, co jim patří, a oni sestoupí zaživa do šeolu, poznáte, že ti mužové odvrhli Jahva.“ 31Když skončil tuto řeč, pukla jim půda pod nohama, 32země otevřela svá ústa a pohltila je, jejich rodiny i všechny Korachovy lidi a veškerý jeho majetek. 33Sestoupili zaživa do šeolu, oni i vše, co jim náleželo. Země se nad nimi opět zavřela a oni zmizeli ze středu shromáždění. 34Při jejich křiku prchli všichni Izraelité, kteří byli v jejich blízkosti. Říkali si totiž: „Aby nás nepohltila země!“ 35Od Jahva vyšlehl oheň a strávil těch dvě stě padesát mužů, kteří nesli kadidlo.

took men. As the word men is not in the text, some read "took counsel;" and some "took courage." Houbigant renders yikkach, rebellionem fecerunt, "they rebelled;" which scarcely any rule of criticism can ever justify. Dr. Geddes' translation is, "Another insurrection was raised against Moses by Korah," etc. Others think that it may mean, "behaved with insolence." But, as Dr. A. Clarke observes, the verb wyyikkach, "and he took" which though at the end of the sentence in English, is the first word in Hebrew, is not in the plural, but the singular; and hence cannot be applied to the acts of all these chiefs. In every part of the Scripture, where this rebellion is referred to, it is attributed to Korah, therefore the verb here belongs to him; and the whole verse should be translated, "Now Korah, son of Izhar, son of Kohath, son of Levi, he took even Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, son of Peleth, son of Reuben, and they rose up," etc.; reading, with some MSS., the Samaritan, and Septuagint, ben, son, instead of beney, sons.

I have not. Though Moses was their ruler, under God, yet, so far from oppressing them, he had not imposed the smallest tax, nor taken, as a present, so much as an ass from one of them. The common present that is now made to the great, in these countries, is a horse; but there is reason to believe, that an ass might formerly have answered the same purpose. "If it is a visit of ceremony from a bashaw," says Dr. Russell, "or other person in power, a fine horse, sometimes with furniture, or some such valuable present, is made to him at his departure." As asses were esteemed no dishonourable beasts for the saddle, Sir. J. Chardin, in his MS., supposes, that when Samuel disclaimed having taken the ass of any one, (1Sam 12:3,) he is to be understood of not having taken any ass for his riding. In the same light, he considers this similar declaration of Moses. His reason is "asses being then esteemed very honourable creatures for riding on, (ch. 22:21, 30 Num 22:21, Num 22:30. Judg 5:10. 2Sam 16:2,) as they are at this very time in Persia, being rode with saddles."

It should seem that Dathan and Abiram had set up a spacious tabernacle in the midst of the tents of their families, where they kept court, met in council, and hung out their flag of defiance against Moses; it is here called the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. There, as in the place of rendezvous, Dathan and Abiram stayed, when Korah and his friends went up to the tabernacle of the Lord, waiting the issue of their trial; but here we are told how they had their business done, before that trial was over. God will take what method he pleases in his judgments.

God now punished them by a secret blast, so as to put the matter beyond dispute; His hand, and His alone, was seen, not only in the plague, but in the manner in which the mortality was arrested. It was necessary that it should be done in this way, that the whole congregation might see that these men who had perished were not "the people of the Lord," and that God, not Moses and Aaron, had destroyed them.
