1Kórach, syn Jishára, syna Kehata, syna Léviho, přibral Dátana a Abírama, syny Elíabovy, i Óna, syna Peletova, Rúbenovce, 2a povstali proti Mojžíšovi spolu s dvěma sty padesáti muži ze synů Izraele, předáky pospolitosti, vyvolenými shromáždění, věhlasnými muži. 3Shromáždili se proti Mojžíšovi a Áronovi a řekli jim: Už dost! Vždyť celá pospolitost, všichni jsou svatí a Hospodin je uprostřed nich. Proč se povyšujete nad Hospodinovo shromáždění? 4Když to Mojžíš uslyšel, padl na tvář. 5Potom promluvil ke Kórachovi a k celé jeho pospolitosti: Ráno Hospodin ukáže, kdo mu patří, kdo je svatý a komu dovolí přiblížit se k němu. Koho vyvolí, tomu dovolí přiblížit se k němu. 6Toto učiňte: Vezměte si kadidelnice, Kórach a celá jeho pospolitost, 7zítra do nich dejte oheň a položte na ně kadidlo před Hospodinem. Ten muž, kterého Hospodin vyvolí, ten je svatý. Už dost, synové Léviho. 8Mojžíš řekl Kórachovi: Slyšte, synové Léviho! 9Je vám to málo, že vás Bůh Izraele oddělil z pospolitosti Izraele a nechal vás přistupovat k sobě, abyste konali službu Hospodinova příbytku, stáli před pospolitostí a sloužili jim? 10Nechal přistupovat tebe a s tebou všechny tvé bratry, syny Léviho, a teď usilujete také o kněžství? 11Proto jste se ty a celá tvoje pospolitost smluvili proti Hospodinu? Co je Áron, že proti němu reptáte? 12Mojžíš si dal zavolat Dátana a Abírama, syny Elíabovy, ale oni řekli: Nepřijdeme. 13Je to málo, že jsi nás vyvedl ze země oplývající mlékem a medem, abys nás usmrtil v pustině, že nad námi chceš ještě takto vládnout? 14Vůbec jsi nás nepřivedl do země oplývající mlékem a medem ani jsi nám nedal do dědictví pole a vinice. Chceš těmto mužům vyloupat oči? Nepřijdeme! 15Mojžíš se velice rozzlobil a řekl Hospodinu: Nehleď na jejich přídavnou oběť! Nevzal jsem od nich ani jediného osla, nikomu z nich jsem nespáchal zlo. 16Kórachovi Mojžíš řekl: Ty a celá tvá pospolitost buďte zítra před Hospodinem — ty s nimi a Áron. 17Vezměte si každý kadidelnici, dejte do nich kadidlo a přineste každý svou kadidelnici před Hospodina, dvě stě padesát kadidelnic, i ty i Áron, každý svou kadidelnici. 18Vzali si tedy každý svou kadidelnici, dali do ní oheň, položili na ně kadidlo a postavili se ke vchodu do stanu setkávání, i Mojžíš a Áron. 19Když proti nim Kórach svolal celou pospolitost ke vchodu do stanu setkávání, ukázala se celé pospolitosti Hospodinova sláva. 20Hospodin promluvil k Mojžíšovi a Áronovi: 21Oddělte se od této pospolitosti, v okamžiku s nimi skoncuji. 22Oni padli na tvář a řekli: Bože, Bože duchů celého tvorstva, zhřešil jeden muž, a ty se budeš hněvat na celou pospolitost? 23Hospodin promluvil k Mojžíšovi: 24Promluv k pospolitosti: Odtáhněte z okolí příbytku Kórachova, Dátanova a Abíramova. 25Mojžíš vstal a šel k Dátanovi a Abíramovi. Za ním šli izraelští starší. 26Pak promluvil k pospolitosti: Odstupte od stanů těchto ničemných mužů a nedotýkejte se ničeho, co jim patří, jinak budete smeteni kvůli všem jejich hříchům. 27Odtáhli tedy z okolí příbytku Kórachova, Dátanova a Abíramova. Dátan a Abíram vyšli a postavili se u vchodu do svých stanů, spolu s svými ženami, syny a malými dětmi. 28Mojžíš řekl: Podle toho poznáte, že mě poslal Hospodin, abych učinil všechny tyto skutky, a ne já sám: 29Jestliže tito zemřou smrtí všech lidí a postihne je úděl všech lidí, neposlal mě Hospodin. 30Jestliže však Hospodin stvoří něco nového, země otevře svůj chřtán, pohltí je i všechno, co jim patří, a sestoupí zaživa do podsvětí, poznáte, že tito muži znevážili Hospodina. 31I stalo se, když domluvil všechna tato slova, že se země pod nimi rozpoltila, 32země otevřela svůj chřtán, pohltila je i jejich domy i všechny lidi, kteří patřili ke Kórachovi, i všechen jejich majetek. 33Oni i všichni, kdo k nim patřili, sestoupili zaživa do podsvětí, země je přikryla a zmizeli zprostřed shromáždění. 34Všichni Izraelci, kteří byli okolo nich, před jejich křikem utekli, neboť si řekli: Jinak země pohltí i nás. 35I vyšlehl oheň od Hospodina a strávil těch dvě stě padesát mužů, kteří přinesli kadidlo.

took men. As the word men is not in the text, some read "took counsel;" and some "took courage." Houbigant renders yikkach, rebellionem fecerunt, "they rebelled;" which scarcely any rule of criticism can ever justify. Dr. Geddes' translation is, "Another insurrection was raised against Moses by Korah," etc. Others think that it may mean, "behaved with insolence." But, as Dr. A. Clarke observes, the verb wyyikkach, "and he took" which though at the end of the sentence in English, is the first word in Hebrew, is not in the plural, but the singular; and hence cannot be applied to the acts of all these chiefs. In every part of the Scripture, where this rebellion is referred to, it is attributed to Korah, therefore the verb here belongs to him; and the whole verse should be translated, "Now Korah, son of Izhar, son of Kohath, son of Levi, he took even Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, son of Peleth, son of Reuben, and they rose up," etc.; reading, with some MSS., the Samaritan, and Septuagint, ben, son, instead of beney, sons.

I have not. Though Moses was their ruler, under God, yet, so far from oppressing them, he had not imposed the smallest tax, nor taken, as a present, so much as an ass from one of them. The common present that is now made to the great, in these countries, is a horse; but there is reason to believe, that an ass might formerly have answered the same purpose. "If it is a visit of ceremony from a bashaw," says Dr. Russell, "or other person in power, a fine horse, sometimes with furniture, or some such valuable present, is made to him at his departure." As asses were esteemed no dishonourable beasts for the saddle, Sir. J. Chardin, in his MS., supposes, that when Samuel disclaimed having taken the ass of any one, (1Sam 12:3,) he is to be understood of not having taken any ass for his riding. In the same light, he considers this similar declaration of Moses. His reason is "asses being then esteemed very honourable creatures for riding on, (ch. 22:21, 30 Num 22:21, Num 22:30. Judg 5:10. 2Sam 16:2,) as they are at this very time in Persia, being rode with saddles."

It should seem that Dathan and Abiram had set up a spacious tabernacle in the midst of the tents of their families, where they kept court, met in council, and hung out their flag of defiance against Moses; it is here called the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. There, as in the place of rendezvous, Dathan and Abiram stayed, when Korah and his friends went up to the tabernacle of the Lord, waiting the issue of their trial; but here we are told how they had their business done, before that trial was over. God will take what method he pleases in his judgments.

God now punished them by a secret blast, so as to put the matter beyond dispute; His hand, and His alone, was seen, not only in the plague, but in the manner in which the mortality was arrested. It was necessary that it should be done in this way, that the whole congregation might see that these men who had perished were not "the people of the Lord," and that God, not Moses and Aaron, had destroyed them.
