1Levita Korach, syn Jishara, syna Kehatova, přibral Rubenovce Dátana a Abirama, syny Eliabovy, a Óna, syna Peletova, 2a spolu s dalšími dvěma sty padesáti izraelskými muži povstali proti Mojžíšovi. Byli to představení obce, členové sněmu, samí věhlasní muži. 3Srotili se proti Mojžíšovi a Áronovi a řekli jim: „Osobujete si příliš! Celá tato obec, ti všichni jsou svatí a Hospodin je uprostřed nich. Proč se tedy pozdvihujete nad Hospodinovo shromáždění?“ 4Když to Mojžíš uslyšel, padl na tvář. 5Potom promluvil ke Korachovi a celé jeho tlupě: „Ráno Hospodin ukáže, kdo mu patří, kdo je svatý a koho k sobě nechá přistoupit. Přistoupí k němu ten, koho vyvolil. 6Udělejte toto: Vezměte si kadidelnice, Korach a celá jeho tlupa. 7Zítra do nich dejte žhavé uhlí a na ně před Hospodinem položte kadidlo. Hospodin potom rozhodne, kdo je svatý. Osobujete si příliš, Leviho synové!“ 8Mojžíš tehdy Korachovi řekl: „Dobře poslouchejte, Leviho synové: 9Je vám to málo, že vás Bůh Izraele oddělil od izraelské obce a dovolil vám přistupovat k němu, sloužit u Hospodinova Příbytku, stát před obcí a sloužit jí? 10Dovolil ti spolu s tvými bratry levity přistupovat k němu, a vy si žádáte ještě kněžství?! 11Ty a celá tvoje tlupa jste se tedy srotili proti Hospodinu – vždyť kdo je Áron, že reptáte proti němu?“ 12Mojžíš pak nechal zavolat Dátana a Abirama, syny Eliabovy, ale oni řekli: „Nepůjdeme! 13Je ti to málo, že jsi nás odvedl ze země oplývající mlékem a medem, abys nás nechal pomřít na poušti? To se ještě musíš dělat naším vůdcem?! 14Do žádné ‚země oplývající mlékem a medem‘ jsi nás nedovedl, žádné ‚pole a vinici‘ jsi nám za dědictví nedal. Chceš snad těm mužům vyloupnout oči? Nepůjdeme!“ 15Mojžíš se tedy velmi rozlítil a řekl Hospodinu: „Nevšímej si jejich obětí! Ani jediného osla jsem si od nich nevzal, ani jedinému z nich jsem neublížil!“ 16Potom Mojžíš řekl Korachovi: „Ty a celá tvoje tlupa buďte zítra před Hospodinem – ty s nimi a také Áron. 17Každý vezměte svou kadidelnici, dejte do ní kadidlo a každý přineste svou kadidelnici před Hospodina – dvě stě padesát kadidelnic. Také ty a Áron přineste svou kadidelnici.“ 18Každý tedy vzal svou kadidelnici, dali do nich řeřavé uhlí, na ně položili kadidlo a postavili se ke vchodu do Stanu setkávání k Mojžíšovi a Áronovi. 19Korach proti nim shromáždil ke vchodu do Stanu setkávání celou obec. Vtom se celé obci ukázala Hospodinova sláva a 20Hospodin promluvil k Mojžíšovi a Áronovi: 21„Oddělte se od této obce, neboť je v okamžiku zahubím!“ 22Padli tedy na tvář. „Ó Bože, Bože duchů veškerého tvorstva!“ zvolali. „Jeden muž zhřeší a ty se hněváš na celou obec?“ 23Hospodin promluvil k Mojžíšovi: 24„Řekni obci: Odstupte ze všech stran od Korachova, Dátanova a Abiramova příbytku!“ 25Mojžíš vstal a šel k Dátanovi a Abiramovi; izraelští stařešinové šli za ním. 26„Odvraťte se od stanů těch ničemů,“ řekl obci. „Nedotýkejte se ničeho, co jim patří, abyste nebyli smeteni se všemi jejich hříchy.“ 27Vyklidili tedy prostor kolem dokola Korachova, Dátanova a Abiramova příbytku. Dátan a Abiram vyšli a stáli u vchodu do svých stanů se svými ženami, syny i malými dětmi. 28Mojžíš řekl: „Takto poznáte, že mě Hospodin poslal činit všechny tyto skutky a že to nedělám o své vůli: 29Zemřou-li tito muži přirozenou smrtí, přihodí-li se jim, co se lidem běžně stává, pak mě neposlal Hospodin. 30Způsobí-li však Hospodin něco úplně nového a země otevře ústa, aby je pohltila se vším, co mají, takže se zaživa propadnou do podsvětí, pak poznáte, že tito muži pohrdli Hospodinem!“ 31Sotva Mojžíš dořekl ta slova, země se pod nimi rozestoupila. 32Země otevřela ústa a pohltila je, jejich rodiny i všechny ty, kdo byli s Korachem, i veškerý jejich majetek. 33Zaživa se propadli do podsvětí i se vším, co měli. Země se nad nimi zavřela a zmizeli zprostřed shromáždění. 34Celý kolemstojící Izrael se dal před jejich křikem na útěk a volali: „Ať země nepohltí i nás!“ 35Od Hospodina pak vyšlehl oheň a těch 250 mužů, kteří přinesli kadidlo, pohltil.

took men. As the word men is not in the text, some read "took counsel;" and some "took courage." Houbigant renders yikkach, rebellionem fecerunt, "they rebelled;" which scarcely any rule of criticism can ever justify. Dr. Geddes' translation is, "Another insurrection was raised against Moses by Korah," etc. Others think that it may mean, "behaved with insolence." But, as Dr. A. Clarke observes, the verb wyyikkach, "and he took" which though at the end of the sentence in English, is the first word in Hebrew, is not in the plural, but the singular; and hence cannot be applied to the acts of all these chiefs. In every part of the Scripture, where this rebellion is referred to, it is attributed to Korah, therefore the verb here belongs to him; and the whole verse should be translated, "Now Korah, son of Izhar, son of Kohath, son of Levi, he took even Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, son of Peleth, son of Reuben, and they rose up," etc.; reading, with some MSS., the Samaritan, and Septuagint, ben, son, instead of beney, sons.

I have not. Though Moses was their ruler, under God, yet, so far from oppressing them, he had not imposed the smallest tax, nor taken, as a present, so much as an ass from one of them. The common present that is now made to the great, in these countries, is a horse; but there is reason to believe, that an ass might formerly have answered the same purpose. "If it is a visit of ceremony from a bashaw," says Dr. Russell, "or other person in power, a fine horse, sometimes with furniture, or some such valuable present, is made to him at his departure." As asses were esteemed no dishonourable beasts for the saddle, Sir. J. Chardin, in his MS., supposes, that when Samuel disclaimed having taken the ass of any one, (1Sam 12:3,) he is to be understood of not having taken any ass for his riding. In the same light, he considers this similar declaration of Moses. His reason is "asses being then esteemed very honourable creatures for riding on, (ch. 22:21, 30 Num 22:21, Num 22:30. Judg 5:10. 2Sam 16:2,) as they are at this very time in Persia, being rode with saddles."

It should seem that Dathan and Abiram had set up a spacious tabernacle in the midst of the tents of their families, where they kept court, met in council, and hung out their flag of defiance against Moses; it is here called the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. There, as in the place of rendezvous, Dathan and Abiram stayed, when Korah and his friends went up to the tabernacle of the Lord, waiting the issue of their trial; but here we are told how they had their business done, before that trial was over. God will take what method he pleases in his judgments.
