 1Jozue shromáždil všechny kmeny Izraele v Sichemu; potom svolal všechny starší Izraele, jeho náčelníky, soudce, dozorce, a oni se seřadili před Bohem.  2Pak Jozue řekl všemu lidu: „Takto mluví Jahve, Bůh Izraele: Za Řekou bydlili kdysi vaši otcové, Abrahámův a Nachorův otec Terach, a sloužili jiným bohům.  3Tu jsem vzal vašeho otce Abraháma z druhé strany Řeky a vodil jsem ho celou kanaánskou zemí, rozmnožil jsem jeho potomstvo a dal jsem mu Izáka.  4Izákovi jsem dal Jakuba a Ezaua. Ezauovi jsem dal do vlastnictví pohoří Seir. Jakub a jeho synové sešli do Egypta.  5Potom jsem poslal Mojžíše a Árona a bil jsem Egypt divy, které jsem způsobil v jeho středu; potom jsem vás odtud vyvedl.  6Vyvedl jsem tedy vaše otce z Egypta a vy jste přišli k moři; Egypťané s vozy a jezdci pronásledovali vaše otce k Rákosovému moři.  7Tu oni volali k Jahvovi a on mezi vás a Egypťany rozestřel hustou mlhu, obrátil na ně moře a ono je zavalilo. Na vlastní oči jste viděli, co jsem v Egyptě udělal, pak jste dlouho pobývali v poušti.  8Potom jsem vás uvedl do země Amoritů, kteří bydlí za Jordánem. Válčili s vámi a já jsem vám je vydal do rukou, takže jste převzali jejich zemi, neboť jsem je před vámi zničil.  9Pak povstal k válce s Izraelem moabský král, Siporův syn Balak, a poslal pro Beorova syna Balaama, aby vás proklel.  10Já jsem však Balaama nechtěl vyslechnout: musel vám dokonce požehnat a já jsem vás zachránil z jeho ruky.  11Pak jste přešli Jordán a dostali jste se k Jerichu, ale obyvatelé Jericha s vámi válčili, Amorité, Perizité, Kanaánci, Chetité, Girgašité, Chivité a Jebusané, a já jsem vám je vydal do rukou.  12Poslal jsem před vámi sršně, kteří před vámi zahnali oba amoritské krále, za to nevděčíš ani svému meči, ani svému luku.  13Dal jsem vám půdu, na niž jste nevynaložili žádnou námahu, města, která jste nepostavili a v nichž jste se usadili, vinice a olivové háje, které jste nevysadili a které jsou vaší potravou.  14A nyní se bojte Jahva a služte mu dokonale a se vší upřímností; odstraňte bohy, jimž sloužili vaši otcové za Řekou a v Egyptě, a služte Jahvovi.  15Zdá-li se vám, že není dobré sloužit Jahvovi, vyvolte si dnes, komu chcete sloužit, buď bohům, jimž sloužili vaši otcové za Řekou, nebo bohům Amoritů, v jejichž zemi teď bydlíte. Ale já a moje rodina budeme sloužit Jahvovi.“  16Lid odpověděl: „Ani pomyšlení, že bychom opustili Jahva a sloužili jiným bohům!  17Vždyť Jahve, náš Bůh, nás a naše otce vyvedl z egyptské země, z domu otroctví, on před našima očima způsobil velká znamení a chránil nás po celou cestu, kterou jsme šli, a mezi všemi národy, přes něž jsme procházeli.  18A Jahve před námi zahnal všechny národy, i Amority, kteří bydleli v této zemi. I my budeme sloužit Jahvovi, neboť on je náš Bůh.“ 19Tu řekl Jozue lidu: „Vy nedokážete sloužit Jahvovi, neboť on je Bůh svatý, Bůh žárlivý, který nestrpí vaše přestupky ani vaše hříchy. 20Opustíte-li Jahva a budete-li sloužit bohům cizincovým, on s vámi naloží opět zle a poté, co vám prokázal dobro, vás zničí.“ 21Lid Jozuovi odpověděl: „Ne! Sloužit budeme Jahvovi.“ 22Tu řekl Jozue lidu: „Jste sami proti sobě svědky, že jste volili Jahva, abyste mu sloužili.“ Oni odpověděli: „Jsme svědky.“ - 23„Odvrhněte tedy cizincovy bohy, kteří jsou ve vašem středu, a nakloňte své srdce k Jahvovi, Bohu Izraele.“ 24Lid Jozuovi řekl: „Budeme sloužit Jahvovi, svému Bohu, poslouchat budeme jeho hlas.“ 25Toho dne uzavřel Jozue za lid smlouvu; stanovil mu v Sichemu ustanovení a právo. 26Jozue ta slova napsal do knihy Božího Zákona. Potom vzal veliký kámen a vztyčil ho tam pod dubem, který je v Jahvově svatyni. 27Pak Jozue řekl všemu lidu: „Hle, tento kámen bude proti nám svědkem, neboť on slyšel všechna slova, kterými se na nás Jahve obrátil; bude svědkem proti vám, aby vám zabránil zapřít vašeho Boha.“ 28Potom Jozue poslal lid nazpět, každého do jeho dědičného údělu. 29Po těchto událostech Jahvův služebník, Nunův syn Jozue, ve věku sto deseti let zemřel. 30Pohřbili ho na území, jež dostal za dědictví, v Timnat-Serachu, který leží v Efraimově pohoří, na sever od hory Gaaš. 31Izrael sloužil Jahvovi během celého Jozuova života a během celého života starších, kteří Jozua přežili a kteří poznali celé dílo, jež Jahve pro Izraele vykonal. 32A Josefovy ostatky, které Izraelité přinesli z Egypta, pohřbili v Sichemu, na kusu pole, které Jakub koupil od synů Sichemova otce Chamora za sto stříbrných a které se stalo dědictvím Josefových synů. 33Potom zemřel Áronův syn Eleazar a pohřbili ho v Gibeji, městě, jež bylo dáno jeho synovi Pinchasovi v Efraimově pohoří.

Joshua. This must have been a different assembly from that mentioned in the preceding chapter, though probably held not long after the former.
Shechem. As it is immediately added, that "they presented themselves before God," which is supposed to mean at the tabernacle; some are of opinion that Joshua caused it to be conveyed from Shiloh to Shechem on this occasion, to give the greater solemnity to his last meeting with the people. The Vatican and Alexandrian copies of the Septuagint, however, read [Selo,] both here and in verse 25 Josh 24:25; which many suppose to have been the original reading. Dr. Shuckford supposes that the covenant was made at Shechem, and that the people went to Shiloh to confirm it. But the most probable opinion seems to be that of Dr. Kennicott, that when all the tribes were assembled as Shechem, Joshua called the chiefs to him on that mount, which had before been consecrated by the law, and by the altar which he had erected.

put. From this exhortation of Joshua, we not only learn that the Israelites still retained some relics of idolatry, but to what gods they were attached.
1. Those whom their fathers worshipped on the other side of the food, or the river Euphrates, i.e., the gods of the Chaldeans, fire, light, the sun, etc.
2. Those of the Egyptians, Apis, Anubis, serpents, vegetables, etc.
3. Those of the Amorites, Moabites, Canaanites, etc., Baal-peor, Astarte, etc. How astonishing is it, that after all that God had done for them, and all the miracles they had seen, there should still be found among them both idols and idolaters!

 27   A curious coincidence of circumstances is related by Livy, the Roman historian: he writes that "when three ambassadors were sent from Rome to complain of the perfidious conduct of the Ćqui, the General informed them, that they might deliver their message to an oak which shaded his tent." On this one of the ambassadors turning away, said, "This venerable oak, and all the gods, shall know that you have violated the peace; they shall now hear our complaints; and may they also soon be witnesses, when we revenge with our arms the violation of divine and human rights." It is worthy of remark that Joshua merely set up a pillar under an oak,--the one, perhaps, to protect the other; while the General directed the ambassadors to address the oak, perhaps with an idolatrous feeling that they were addressing one of the gods, who would aid his cause; while the Roman ambassadors caught the feeling, and really invoked the aid of the oak and the gods.

CONCLUDING REMARKS ON JOSHUA.
The Book of Joshua is one of the most important documents in the Old Testament. The rapid conquest of the Promised Land, and the actual settlement of the Israelites in it, afford a striking accomplishment of the Divine predictions to Abraham and the succeeding patriarchs; and at the same time bear the most unequivocal and ample testimony to the authenticity of this sacred book. Several of the transactions related in it are confirmed in a very extraordinary manner, by the traditions current among heathen nations, and preserved by ancient profane historians of undoubted character. Thus there are monuments still in existence, which prove that the Carthaginians were a colony of Syrians who escaped from Joshua; as also that the inhabitants of Leptis, in Africa, came originally from the Sidonians, who abandoned their country on account of the calamities with which it was overwhelmed. Procopius relates that the Phoenicians fled before the Hebrews into Africa, and spread themselves abroad as far as the pillars of Hercules; and adds, "In Numidia, where now stands the city Tigisis (Tangiers), they have erected two columns, on which, in Phoenician characters, is the following inscription:--"We are the Phoenicians who fled from the face of Jesus (Joshua) the son of Naue" (Nun).
