1Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, 2by which also you are being kept safe, if you hold fast that Word which I preached to you; unless you believe in vain. 3For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4and that He was buried, and that He was raised the third day according to the Scriptures, 5and that He was seen by Cephas, then by the twelve. 6After that He was seen by over five hundred brethren at once, of whom the greater part remain until the present time, but some have fallen asleep. 7After that He was seen by Jacob, then by each of the apostles. 8Then last of all He was seen by me also, as by one of untimely birth. 9For I am the least of the apostles, who am not fit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than every one of them, yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me. 11Therefore, whether it was I or they, so we preach and so you believe. 12Now if Christ is preached that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13But if there is no resurrection of the dead, neither has Christ been raised. 14And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is vain and your faith is also vain. 15Yes, and we are found to be false witnesses of God, because we have testified of God that He raised up Christ, whom He did not raise up; if in fact the dead are not raised. 16For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised. 17And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is vain; you are still in your sins. 18Then also those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable. 20But now Christ has been raised from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21For since through man came death, through Man also came the resurrection of the dead. 22For as in Adam everyone dies, even so in Christ everyone shall be made alive. 23But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ's at His coming. 24Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God, even the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power. 25For it is necessary for Him to reign till He has put every enemy under His feet. 26The last enemy that will be destroyed is death. 27For He has subjected everything under His feet. Why then are they immersed for the dead? 30And why are we in danger every hour? 31I affirm, by your rejoicing which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die throughout the day. 32If like other men I have fought with beasts at Ephesus, what profit is it to me, if the dead are not raised? Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die! 33Do not be led astray: Evil company corrupts good character. 34Awake to righteousness, and do not sin; for some do not have the knowledge of God. I speak to your shame. 35But someone will say, How are the dead raised up? And with what body do they come? 36Foolish one, what you sow is not made alive unless it dies. 37And what you sow, you do not sow the body that shall be, but mere grain; perhaps wheat or something else. 38But God gives it a body as He purposed, and to each seed its own body. 39Not every flesh is the same flesh, but there is one flesh of men, another flesh of animals, another of fish, and another of birds. 40There are also heavenly bodies and earthly bodies; but the brightness of the heavenly is one, and the brightness of the earthly is another. 41There is one brightness of the sun, another brightness of the moon, and another brightness of the stars; for one star differs from another star in brightness. 42So also is the resurrection of the dead. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 53For this corruptible needs to put on incorruption, and this mortal needs to put on immortality. 54So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: Death is swallowed up in victory. 55O Death, where is your sting? El triunfo del creyente sobre la muerte y la tumba.-Una exhortación a la diligencia. Vv. 1-11. La palabra resurrección señala, habitualmente, nuestra existencia más allá de la tumba. No se halla un rasgo de la doctrina del apóstol en todas las enseñanzas de los filósofos. La doctrina de la muerte y resurrección de Cristo es el fundamento del cristianismo. Si se quita, se hunden de inmediato todas nuestras esperanzas de eternidad. Por sostener con firmeza esta verdad los cristianos soportan el día de la tribulación, y se mantienen fieles a Dios. Creemos en vano, a menos que nos mantengamos en la fe del evangelio. Esta verdad es confirmada por las profecías del Antiguo Testamento; muchos vieron a Cristo después que resucitó. Este apóstol fue altamente favorecido, pero siempre tuvo una baja opinión de sí, y la expresaba. Cuando los pecadores son hechos santos por la gracia divina, Dios hace que el recuerdo de los pecados anteriores los haga humildes, diligentes y fieles. Atribuye a la gracia divina todo lo que era valioso en él. Vv. 12-19. Habiendo mostrado que Cristo fue resucitado, el apóstol contesta a los que dicen que no habrá resurrección. No habría justificación ni salvación si Cristo no hubiera resucitado. Si Cristo estuviera aún entre los muertos, ¿no debería la fe en Cristo ser vana e inútil? La prueba de la resurrección del cuerpo es la resurrección de nuestro Señor. Aun los que murieron en la fe hubieran perecido en sus pecados si Cristo no hubiera resucitado. Todos los que creen en Cristo tienen esperanza en Él, como Redentor; esperanza de redención y salvación por Él, pero si no hubiera resurrección, o recompensa futura, la esperanza de ellos en Él sería sólo para esta vida. Tendrían que estar en peor condición que el resto de la humanidad, especialmente en la época y las circunstancias en que escribió el apóstol, porque en aquel entonces, los cristianos eran odiados y perseguidos por todos los hombres. Pero no es así; ellos, de todos los hombres, disfrutan bendiciones firmes en medio de todas sus dificultades y pruebas, aun en los tiempos de la persecución más fuerte.
Vv. 20-34. A todos los que por fe se unen a Cristo, por su resurrección se les asegura la propia. Como por el pecado del primer Adán todos los hombres se hicieron mortales, porque todos obtuvieron su misma naturaleza pecaminosa, así, por medio de la resurrección de Cristo todos los que son hechos partícipes del Espíritu, y de la naturaleza espiritual, reviviremos y viviremos por siempre.
Habrá un orden en la resurrección. El mismo Cristo fue la primicia; en su venida resucitará su pueblo redimido antes que los otros; al final, también los impíos serán resucitados. Entonces, será el fin del estado presente de cosas. Si queremos triunfar en esa solemne e importante ocasión, debemos someternos ahora a su reinado, aceptar su salvación, y vivir para su gloria. Entonces, nos regocijaremos al completarse su empresa, para que Dios reciba toda la gloria de nuestra salvación, para que le sirvamos por siempre, y disfrutemos de su favor. —¿Qué harán los que se bautizan por los muertos, si en ninguna manera los muertos resucitan? Quizá aquí se use el bautismo como una figura de aflicciones, sufrimientos y martirio, como en Mateo xx, 22, 23. ¿Qué es, o qué será, de quienes sufrieron muchos daños graves y hasta perdieron su vida por esta doctrina de la resurrección, si los muertos en ninguna manera resucitan? -Cualquiera sea el significado, indudablemente los corintios entendían el argumento del apóstol. Para nosotros es evidente que el cristianismo sería una confesión necia, si no nos propusiera esperanzas más allá de esta vida, al menos en tiempos de peligro, como en los primeros tiempos, y a menudo desde entonces.
Es lícito y adecuado que los cristianos se propongan ventajas para sí mismos por su fidelidad a Dios; y dar nuestro fruto para santidad, y nuestro fin sea la vida eterna. Pero no debemos vivir como bestias, porque no morimos como ellas. Debe ser la ignorancia sobre Dios lo que lleva a que alguien no crea en la resurrección y la vida futura. Los que reconocen un Dios y una providencia, y observan cuán injustas son las cosas en la vida actual, cuán a menudo le va muy mal a los mejores hombres, no pueden dudar de un estado ulterior en que todo será enderezado. No nos juntemos con los impíos, pero advirtamos a todos los que nos rodeen, especialmente a los niños y jóvenes, que los eviten como a la peste. Despertemos a la justicia, y no pequemos.
Vv. 35-50. -1. ¿Cómo resucitarán los muertos, esto es, por qué medios? ¿Cómo pueden resucitar? -2. En cuanto a los cuerpos que resucitarán, ¿tendrán la misma forma, estatura, miembros y cualidades? La primera objeción es de quienes se oponen a la doctrina, la seguda de los curiosos. La respuesta para la
primera es: será efectuada por el poder divino; ese poder que todos ven obrar algo parecido, año tras año, en la muerte y el revivir del trigo. Necio es cuestionar al omnipotente poder de Dios para resucitar a los muertos, cuando lo vemos diariamente vivificando y reviviendo cosas que están muertas. A la
segunda pregunta: el grano emprende un tremendo cambio, y así será con los muertos, cuando sean levantados y vivan otra vez. La semilla muere, aunque una parte de ella brota a vida nueva, pero no podemos entender cómo es esto. Las obras de la creación y de la providencia nos enseñan diariamente a ser humildes, y a admirar la sabiduría y la bondad del Creador. Hay una gran variedad entre otros cuerpos como la hay entre las plantas. Hay una variedad de gloria entre los cuerpos celestiales. Los cuerpos de los muertos, cuando sean levantados, serán adecuados para el estado celestial; y habrá una variedad de gloria entre ellos.
Enterrar a los muertos es como entregar la semilla a la tierra para que brote de ella otra vez. Nada es más aborrecible que un cuerpo muerto. Pero en la resurrección, los creyentes tendrán cuerpos preparados para estar unidos para siempre a espíritus hechos perfectos. Todas las cosas son posibles para Dios. Él es el Autor y la Fuente de la vida espiritual y de la santidad para todo su pueblo, por la provisión de su Espíritu Santo para el alma; también vivificará y cambiará el cuerpo por obra de su Espíritu. Los muertos en Cristo no serán sólo resucitados sino resucitarán cambiados gloriosamente. Los cuerpos de los santos serán cambiados cuando resuciten. Entonces, serán cuerpos gloriosos y espirituales, aptos para el mundo y el estado celestiales, donde vivirán para siempre jamás. El cuerpo humano en su forma presente y con sus necesidades y debilidades, no puede entrar en el reino de Dios, ni disfrutar de él. Entonces, no sembremos para la carne, de la cual sólo podemos cosechar corrupción. El cuerpo sigue al estado del alma. Por tanto, el que descuida la vida del alma, expulsa a su bien presente; el que rehúsa vivir para Dios, despilfarra todo lo que tiene.
Vv. 51-58. No todos los santos morirán, pero todos serán cambiados. Muchas verdades del evangelio que estaban ocultas en misterios son dadas a conocer. La muerte nunca aparecerá en las regiones a las cuales nuestro Señor llevará a sus santos resucitados. Por tanto, procuremos la plena seguridad de la fe y la esperanza para que, en medio del dolor, y en la perspectiva de la muerte, podamos pensar con calma en los horrores de la tumba, seguros de que nuestros cuerpos dormirán ahí, y mientras tanto, nuestras almas estarán presentes con el Redentor.
El pecado da a la muerte todo su poder nocivo. El aguijón de la muerte es el pecado, pero Cristo, al morir quitó este aguijón; Él hizo expiación por el pecado; Él obtuvo la remisión del pecado. La fuerza del pecado es la ley. Nadie puede responder a sus exigencias, soportar su maldición o terminar sus transgresiones. De ahí, el terror y la angustia. De ahí que la muerte sea terrible para el incrédulo y el impenitente. La muerte puede sorprender al creyente, pero no puede retenerlo en su poder. ¡Cuántos manantiales de gozo para los santos, y de gratitud a Dios, son abiertas por la muerte y la resurrección, los sufrimientos y las conquistas del Redentor! -En el versículo 58 tenemos una exhortación a que los creyentes sean constantes, firmes en la fe de ese evangelio que predicó el apóstol y que ellos recibieron. Además, a permanecer inconmovibles en su esperanza y expectativa de este gran privilegio de resucitar incorruptible e inmortal. Para abundar en la obra del Señor, haciendo siempre el servicio del Señor y obedeciendo los mandamientos del Señor. Que Cristo nos dé la fe, y aumente nuestra fe, para que nosotros no sólo estemos a salvo, sino gozosos y triunfantes.
