1Jozue pak shromáždil všechny izraelské kmeny do Šekemu a svolal starší Izraele, jeho předáky, jeho soudce a jeho správce a oni se postavili před Bohem. 2Jozue řekl všemu lidu: Toto praví Hospodin, Bůh Izraele: Vaši otcové pobývali odedávna na druhé straně řeky Eufratu — Terach, otec Abrahamův a otec Náchorův — a sloužili jiným bohům. 3Vzal jsem vašeho otce Abrahama z druhé strany řeky a provedl jsem jej celou kenaanskou zemí, rozmnožil jsem jeho potomstvo a dal jsem mu Izáka. 4Izákovi jsem dal Jákoba a Ezaua. Ezauovi jsem dal pohoří Seír, aby je obsadil. Jákob a jeho synové sestoupili do Egypta. 5Poslal jsem Mojžíše a Árona, porazil jsem Egypt tím, co jsem učinil uprostřed něj, a potom jsem vás vyvedl. 6Když jsem vyvedl vaše otce z Egypta, přišli jste k moři a Egypťané vaše otce pronásledovali s vozbou a na koních k Rákosovému moři. 7Když křičeli k Hospodinu, položil mezi tebe a Egypťany temnotu, přivedl na ně moře a přikryl je. Bojovali proti vám emorejští, perizejští, kenaanští, chetejští, girgašejští, chivejští a jebúsejští občané Jericha a já jsem vám je vydal do ruky. 12Poslal jsem před vámi děs a vyhnal je před vámi, dva emorejské krále, nikoli vaším mečem ani vaším lukem. 13Dal jsem vám zemi, ve které ses nenamáhal a města, která jste nestavěli, a usadili jste se v nich. Jíte z vinic a olivových hájů, které jste nesázeli. 14Nuže, bojte se Hospodina a služte mu bezúhonně a věrně. Odstraňte bohy, kterým sloužili vaši otcové za řekou a v Egyptě, a služte Hospodinu. 15Jestliže je však ve vašich očích nežádoucí, abyste sloužili Hospodinu, vyberte si dnes, komu budete sloužit: Zda bohům, kterým sloužili vaši otcové, když byli za řekou, nebo zda bohům Emorejců, když sídlíte v jejich zemi. Já a můj dům budeme sloužit Hospodinu. 16Nato lid odpověděl. Řekl: Ať je to od nás vzdáleno, že bychom opustili Hospodina, abychom sloužili jiným bohům. 17Vždyť Hospodin, náš Bůh, je ten, kdo vyvedl nás a naše otce z egyptské země, z domu otroctví, a který učinil před našima očima tato velká znamení a zachoval nás na celé cestě, po které jsme šli, a mezi všemi národy, uprostřed nichž jsme procházeli. 18Hospodin od nás vyhnal všechny ty národy a emorejského obyvatele té země. Také my budeme sloužit Hospodinu, protože on je náš Bůh.  19Tu řekl Jozue lidu: Nebudete schopni sloužit Hospodinu, protože on je svatý Bůh. On je žárlivý Bůh, nesnese vaše přestoupení a vaše hříchy.  20Když opustíte Hospodina a budete sloužit cizím bohům, odvrátí se a zle s vámi naloží, skoncuje s vámi i poté, co vám prokazoval dobro. 21Ale lid řekl Jozuovi: Nikoli, vždyť budeme sloužit Hospodinu. 22Jozue tedy řekl lidu: Jste svědky sami proti sobě, že vy jste si vybrali Hospodina, abyste mu sloužili. Oni řekli: Jsme svědky. 23Nuže, odstraňte cizí bohy, které máte mezi sebou, a nakloňte své srdce k Hospodinu, Bohu Izraele. 24A lid Jozuovi řekl: Hospodinu, svému Bohu, budeme sloužit a jeho hlas budeme poslouchat. 25Jozue v onen den uzavřel s lidem smlouvu a předložil mu v Šekemu ustanovení a právní nařízení. 26Jozue pak zapsal tato slova do knihy Božího zákona, vzal velký kámen a postavil ho tam pod terebint, který stojí v Hospodinově svatyni. 27Nato Jozue řekl všemu lidu: Hle, tento kámen bude mezi námi na svědectví, protože on slyšel všechny řeči, které s námi Hospodin mluvil. Bude mezi vámi na svědectví, ať nelžete proti svému Bohu. 28Potom Jozue lid propustil, každého k jeho dědictví. 29I stalo se po těchto událostech, že Jozue, syn Núnův, otrok Hospodinův, zemřel ve věku sto deseti let. 30A pohřbili ho na území jeho dědictví v Timnat-serachu, který je v efrajimském pohoří severně od hory Gaaše. 31Izrael sloužil Hospodinu po všechny Jozuovy dny a po všechny dny starších, kteří Jozua přežili a kteří znali celé Hospodinovo dílo, jež vykonal pro Izrael. 32Josefovy kosti, které vynesli synové Izraele z Egypta, pohřbili v Šekemu na dílu pole, který koupil Jákob od synů Chamóra, otce Šekemova, za sto kesít, a dostaly se synům Josefovým do dědictví. 33Zemřel i Eleazar, syn Áronův, a pohřbili jej na návrší jeho syna Pinchasa, které mu bylo dáno v efrajimském pohoří.

Joshua. This must have been a different assembly from that mentioned in the preceding chapter, though probably held not long after the former.
Shechem. As it is immediately added, that "they presented themselves before God," which is supposed to mean at the tabernacle; some are of opinion that Joshua caused it to be conveyed from Shiloh to Shechem on this occasion, to give the greater solemnity to his last meeting with the people. The Vatican and Alexandrian copies of the Septuagint, however, read [Selo,] both here and in verse 25 Josh 24:25; which many suppose to have been the original reading. Dr. Shuckford supposes that the covenant was made at Shechem, and that the people went to Shiloh to confirm it. But the most probable opinion seems to be that of Dr. Kennicott, that when all the tribes were assembled as Shechem, Joshua called the chiefs to him on that mount, which had before been consecrated by the law, and by the altar which he had erected.

put. From this exhortation of Joshua, we not only learn that the Israelites still retained some relics of idolatry, but to what gods they were attached.
1. Those whom their fathers worshipped on the other side of the food, or the river Euphrates, i.e., the gods of the Chaldeans, fire, light, the sun, etc.
2. Those of the Egyptians, Apis, Anubis, serpents, vegetables, etc.
3. Those of the Amorites, Moabites, Canaanites, etc., Baal-peor, Astarte, etc. How astonishing is it, that after all that God had done for them, and all the miracles they had seen, there should still be found among them both idols and idolaters!

 27   A curious coincidence of circumstances is related by Livy, the Roman historian: he writes that "when three ambassadors were sent from Rome to complain of the perfidious conduct of the Ćqui, the General informed them, that they might deliver their message to an oak which shaded his tent." On this one of the ambassadors turning away, said, "This venerable oak, and all the gods, shall know that you have violated the peace; they shall now hear our complaints; and may they also soon be witnesses, when we revenge with our arms the violation of divine and human rights." It is worthy of remark that Joshua merely set up a pillar under an oak,--the one, perhaps, to protect the other; while the General directed the ambassadors to address the oak, perhaps with an idolatrous feeling that they were addressing one of the gods, who would aid his cause; while the Roman ambassadors caught the feeling, and really invoked the aid of the oak and the gods.

CONCLUDING REMARKS ON JOSHUA.
The Book of Joshua is one of the most important documents in the Old Testament. The rapid conquest of the Promised Land, and the actual settlement of the Israelites in it, afford a striking accomplishment of the Divine predictions to Abraham and the succeeding patriarchs; and at the same time bear the most unequivocal and ample testimony to the authenticity of this sacred book. Several of the transactions related in it are confirmed in a very extraordinary manner, by the traditions current among heathen nations, and preserved by ancient profane historians of undoubted character. Thus there are monuments still in existence, which prove that the Carthaginians were a colony of Syrians who escaped from Joshua; as also that the inhabitants of Leptis, in Africa, came originally from the Sidonians, who abandoned their country on account of the calamities with which it was overwhelmed. Procopius relates that the Phoenicians fled before the Hebrews into Africa, and spread themselves abroad as far as the pillars of Hercules; and adds, "In Numidia, where now stands the city Tigisis (Tangiers), they have erected two columns, on which, in Phoenician characters, is the following inscription:--"We are the Phoenicians who fled from the face of Jesus (Joshua) the son of Naue" (Nun).
