1And when it was decided that we should sail to Italy, they delivered Paul and some other prisoners to one named Julius, a centurion of the Augustan Regiment. 2So, boarding a ship of Adramyttium, we put to sea, meaning to sail along the coasts of Asia. Aristarchus, a Macedonian of Thessalonica, was with us. 3And the next day we landed at Sidon. And Julius treated Paul kindly and gave him liberty to go to his friends and receive care. 4And when we had set sail from there, we sailed under the shelter of Cyprus, because the winds were contrary. 5And when we had sailed over the sea which is off Cilicia and Pamphylia, we came to Myra of Lycia. 6There the centurion found an Alexandrian ship sailing to Italy, and he put us on it. 7And when we had sailed slowly many days, and arrived with difficulty off Cnidus, the wind not permitting us to proceed, we sailed under the shelter of Crete off Salmone. 8And passing it with difficulty, we came to a place called Fair Havens, near the city of Lasea. 9Now when much time had been spent, and sailing was now dangerous because the fast was already past, Paul exhorted them, 10saying, Men, I perceive that this voyage will end with injury and much loss, not only of the cargo and ship, but also our lives. 11Nevertheless the centurion was more persuaded by the helmsman and the owner of the ship than by the things spoken by Paul. 12And because the harbor was not suitable to winter in, the majority advised to set sail from there also, if by any means they could reach Phoenix, a harbor of Crete opening toward the southwest and northwest, and winter there. 13And when the south wind blew softly, supposing that they had obtained their purpose, raising anchor, they sailed close by Crete. 14But not long after, a tempestuous wind arose, called Euroclydon. 15So when the ship was caught, and could not head into the wind, we let her be carried along. 16And running under the shelter of an island called Clauda, we secured the boat with difficulty. 17When they had taken it on board, they used cables to undergird the ship; and fearing lest they should run aground on the quicksands, they struck sail and so were driven.  18And because we were exceedingly tempest-tossed, the next day they lightened the ship. 19On the third day we threw the ship's tackle overboard with our own hands. 20Now when neither sun nor stars appeared for many days, and no small tempest beat on us, all hope that we would be saved was then taken away. 21But after long abstinence from food, then Paul stood in the midst of them and said, Men, you should have heeded me, and not have sailed from Crete and incurred this injury and loss. 22And now I urge you to be of good cheer, for there will be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship. 23For there stood by me this night an angel of God, to whom I belong and whom I serve, 24saying, Do not be afraid, Paul; you must be brought before Caesar; and indeed God has granted you all those who sail with you. 25Therefore be of good cheer, men, for I believe God, that it will be just as it was told me. 26However, we must fall on a certain island. 27Now when the fourteenth night had come, as we were driven up and down in the Adriatic Sea, about midnight the sailors sensed that they were drawing near some land. 28And they took soundings and found it to be twenty fathoms; and when they had gone a little farther, they took soundings again and found it to be fifteen fathoms. 29Then, fearing lest we should run aground on the rocks, they dropped four anchors from the stern, and wished for day to come. 30And as the sailors were seeking to escape from the ship, when they had let down the boat into the sea, under pretense of putting out anchors from the prow, 31Paul said to the centurion and the soldiers, Unless these men remain in the ship, you cannot be saved. 32Then the soldiers cut away the ropes of the boat and let it fall off. 33And as day was about to dawn, Paul begged them all to take food, saying, Today is the fourteenth day you have waited and continued without food, and eaten nothing. 34Therefore I urge you to take nourishment, for this is for your survival, because not a hair will fall from the head of any of you. 35And when he had said these things, he took bread and gave thanks to God in the presence of them all; and when he had broken it he began to eat. 36Then they all became more encouraged, and also took food themselves. 37And in all we were two hundred and seventy-six souls on the ship. 38So when they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship and threw out the wheat into the sea. 39And when it was day, they did not recognize the land; but they observed a certain bay with a beach, onto which they purposed to run the ship if they were able. 40And they cast off the anchors and left them in the sea, meanwhile loosing the rudder bands; and they hoisted the mainsail to the wind and made for shore. 41But striking a place where two seas met, they ran the ship aground; and the prow stuck fast and remained immovable, but the stern was being broken up by the violence of the waves. 42And the soldiers' purpose was to kill the prisoners, that not any of them should swim away and escape. 43But the centurion, desiring to save Paul, kept them from their purpose, and commanded that those who could swim should jump overboard first and get to land; 44and for the rest to go, some on boards and some on parts of the ship. And so it was that they all escaped safely to land.


Comentario de la Biblia de Matthew Henry
Versículos 1-11. Viaje de Pablo a Roma. 12-20. Pablo y sus compañeros amenazados por una tempestad. 21-29. Recibe una garantía divina de seguridad. 30-38. Pablo exhorta a los que están con él. 39-44. El naufragio.

Vv. 1-11. El consejo de Dios determinó, antes que lo determinara el consejo de Festo, que Pablo debía ir a Roma, porque Dios tenía allá obra para que él hiciera. Aquí se estipula el rumbo que siguieron y los lugares que tocaron. Con esto Dios estimula a los que sufren por Él a que confíen en Él; porque Él puede poner en los corazones de quienes menos se espera que se hagan sus amigos.
Los marineros deben aprovechar al máximo el viento, y de igual modo, todos nosotros en nuestro paso por el océano de este mundo. Cuando los vientos son contrarios debemos seguir adelante tan bien como podamos.
Muchos de los que no retroceden por las providencias negativas, no salen adelante por las providencias favorables. Muchos son los cristianos verdaderos que se lamentan de las preocupaciones de sus almas, que tienen mucho que hacer para mantenerse en su posición.
Todo puerto bueno no es puerto seguro. Muchos de los que muestran respeto a los buenos ministros, no siguen sus consejos. Sin embargo, el suceso convencerá a los pecadores de la vanidad de sus esperanzas y de la necedad de su conducta.

Vv. 12-20. Los que se lanzan al océano de este mundo, con un buen viento, no saben con qué tormentas pueden encontrarse, y por tanto, no deben dar por sentado que hayan logrado su propósito. No nos hagamos la expectativa de estar completamente a salvo, sino hasta que entremos al cielo. Ellos no vieron sol ni estrellas por muchos días. Así, a veces, la tristeza es el estado del pueblo de Dios en cuanto a sus asuntos espirituales: andan en tinieblas y no tienen luz.
Véase aquí qué es la riqueza del mundo: aunque codiciada como bendición, puede que llegue el momento en que sea una carga; no sólo demasiado pesada para llevarla a salvo, sino suficientemente pesada para hundir al que la tenga. Los hijos de este mundo pueden ser dispendiosos con los bienes para salvar su vida, pero son tacaños con sus bienes para las obras de piedad y caridad, y para sufrir por Cristo. Todo hombre preferiría hacer que zozobren sus bienes antes que su vida, pero muchos prefieren más bien que zozobre la fe y la buena conciencia antes que sus bienes. El medio que usaron los marineros no resultó, pero cuando los pecadores renuncian a toda esperanza de salvarse a sí mismos, están preparados para entender la palabra de Dios y para confiar en su misericordia por medio de Jesucristo.

Vv. 21-29. Ellos no escucharon al apóstol cuando les advirtió del peligro; sin embargo, si reconocen su necedad y se arrepienten de ella, él les habla consuelo y alivio en medio del peligro. La mayoría de la gente se mete en problemas porque no saben cuando están bien; se dañan y se pierden por apuntar a la enmienda de su condición, a menudo en contra del consejo.
Obsérvese la solemne confesión que hizo Pablo de su relación con Dios. Ninguna tormenta ni tempestad puede obstaculizar el favor de Dios hacia su pueblo dado que es ayuda siempre cercana. Es consuelo para los siervos fieles de Dios en dificultades que sus vidas serán prolongadas en la medida que el Señor tenga una obra para que ellos hagan. Si Pablo se hubiera comprometido innecesariamente en mala compañía, hubiera sido justamente lanzado con ellos, pero al llamarlo Dios, aquellos son preservados con él. Ellos te son dados; no hay mayor satisfacción para un hombre bueno que saber que es una bendición pública. Él los consuela con los consuelos con que él mismo fue consolado. Dios siempre es fiel, por tanto, estén siempre contentos todos los que dependen de sus promesas. Como decir y hacer no son dos cosas para Dios, tampoco creer y disfrutar deben serlo para nosotros. La esperanza es el ancla del alma, segura y firme, que entra hasta dentro del velo. Que los que están en tinieblas espirituales se sostengan firme de esto y no piensen en zarpar de nuevo, sino en permanecer en Cristo y esperar que alboree el día y las sombras huyan.

Vv. 30-38. Dios que determinó el fin, que ellos sean salvados, determinó el medio, que fueran salvados por la ayuda de estos marineros. El deber es nuestro, los sucesos son de Dios; no confiamos en Dios, pero le tentamos cuando decimos que nos ponemos bajo su protección, si no usamos los medios apropiados para nuestra seguridad, como los que están a nuestro alcance. —¡Pero cuán egoístas son en general los hombres que, a menudo están listos para procurar su propia seguridad por la destrucción del prójimo! Dichosos quienes tienen en su compañía a uno como Pablo, que no sólo tiene relación con el Cielo, sino que era espíritu vivificante para quienes le rodeaban. La tristeza según el mundo produce muerte, mientras el gozo en Dios es vida y paz, en las angustias y peligros más grandes.
El consuelo de las promesas de Dios puede ser nuestro sólo si dependemos con fe de Él para que cumpla su palabra en nosotros; la salvación que Él revela hay que esperarla en el uso de los medios que Él determina. Si Dios nos ha escogido para salvación, también ha determinado que la obtengamos por el arrepentimiento, la fe, la oración y la obediencia perseverante; presunción fatal es esperarla en alguna otra manera. Estímulo para la gente es encomendarse a Cristo como su Salvador cuando quienes invitan, muestran claramente que así lo hacen ellos mismos.

Vv. 39-44. El barco que había capeado la tormenta en el mar abierto, donde había espacio, se rompe en pedazos cuando está amarrado. Así, está perdido el corazón que fija en el mundo sus afectos, y se aferra a éste. Las tentaciones de Satanás lo golpean y se acaba, pero hay esperanza en tanto se mantenga por encima del mundo, aunque zarandeado con afanes y tumultos. Ellos tenían la costa a la vista, pero zozobraron en el puerto; así se nos enseña que nunca nos sintamos seguros.
Aunque hay grandes dificultades en el camino de la salvación prometida, se producirá sin falta. Sucederá no importa cuántas sean las pruebas y peligros, porque en el debido momento todos los creyentes llegarán a salvo al cielo. Señor Jesús, tú nos aseguraste que ninguno de los tuyos perecerá. Tú los llevarás a todos a salvo a la playa celestial. ¡Y cuán placentero será ese desembarco! Tú los presentarás a tu Padre, y darás a tu Espíritu Santo la plena posesión de ellos para siempre.
